CD - "One Step Forward"

CD Cover - One Step ForwardThe idea of doing a CD came when Moira won the Port Fairy Folk Festival Songwriting Competition in 2005. After performing at the feature concert in front of 3,000 people and top international performers (including John McCutcheon, Brian Kennedy, Greg Champion, Tonchi Macintosh and Franciscus Henri to name but a few!) on the Sunday afternoon, Moira was approached by several audience members for a copy of the award winning song 'Why not let a mother'. It was suggested that such a marketable song could well represent the sentiments of so many like-minded women in the audience.

Then the search was on for how to go about entering this rather scary business of recording. A few months rolled on, and after attending a Darebin Songwriting Workshop, held by the local council she was introduced to Brent Parlane, who had conducted the session. He was most encouraging about her songs and after listening to a demo, arranged a meeting with producer Hugh McDonald (of Redgum fame).

Hugh McDonald started recording Moira's songs in November 2005 and booked two wonderful Melbourne session musicians, James Clark on Double Bass (Society Syncopaters and Gil Askey Combo) and drummer Andy Swann. They spent two days putting down the rhythm tracks, but it wasn't until February that they really got down to business to get the eleven tracks finished.

A tremendous and fast learning curve for a singer/nurse/mother combination, but what an experience it was. With the expert guidance and production skills of Hugh and his beautiful guitar, fiddle, mandolin and dobro solos, the album was well on the way to becoming a wonderful reality.

Release in April 2006, it features a range of musical styles but retains an earthy rocked up folk genre that is truly original.
